Notes on a Pandemic

25 Apr, 2020

finding a time in the quiet
a merciless time for thought

as the deer mull around the yard and concern themselves with us
but are not concerned by our concerns
death for them comes more quickly than for us
they’re used to it in a way we abstract
that death we are forced now to contemplate
in our state-enforced solitude

i sit outside and watch the turkeys
discordant gobbles in bird drunkspeak
sloppy mouthed ululation

i’m in a near constant refresh on linkedin
the #livelaughlove personal brand of perfectly coiffed capitalists
the debasement i feel like a rash

in the gator tracing a lazy infinity on the front 30
my companions:
that pile of deer eating as if the world isnt ending
that cocksure gobbler catcalling
those two mergansers that my father hates

a gray robbed of any pearlescence hangs near-touch to the top of my head
the bluebirds don’t mind
red winged blackbirds angrily rush headlong to any perceived threat
